Stanford Windows Infrastructure - DFS Namespace

Distributed File System (DFS) Namespace allows group and home shares on different windows servers to be grouped together and present them to users as a virtual tree of folders known as a namespace. DFS will give Stanford a unified namespace for Window (CIFS) based file storage similar to AFS.

Stanford's DFS Namespace

The DFS namespace for Stanford begins at \\win.stanford.edu

IT Servers will support a set of root servers with the following roots.  Departments, Schools and Groups can request links to their own windows servers.

Roots Description Status
class Class based No configured
data No configured
dept Departments and Schools Bata Testing
dist Software Distributions No configured
group Groups and Clubs No configured
users Users No configured

Accessing the DFS Namespace

The DFS Namespace is an integrated part of Active Directory, requiring users to have a SUNetID and their computer systems configured to authenticate with the Windows Infrastructure .

Supported Clients and Targets

A client is any system that a user will use to access file shares and data located on a specific share.  A target is a server that will host the data and the share point.
